Joanna Ballard Mastny worked her way clear across the country to finally settle here in Georgia. She was born in Fountain Valley, California, in 1980. With her father in the oil business, her family quickly moved to Houston, Texas, where Joanna grew up, graduating from high school in 1999. Joanna attended Furman University and graduated in 2003, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. In 2006, Joanna received her Juris Doctor from St. Mary’s School of Law, in San Antonio, Texas, graduating magna cum laude.
Joanna joined the Navy Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps during her final year of law school, remaining on inactive duty until graduation. After completing the Texas Bar Exam, she attended Officer and JAG Corps training in Newport, Rhode Island, and then reported for her first active duty station in Fort Worth, Texas, where she provided legal assistance and military defense services to military members and their dependents for two years. Joanna then finally made her way to Georgia, serving as the Staff Judge Advocate for the Navy command here at Fort Gordon.
In 2012, Joanna left active duty for the civilian world, and returned home to Houston, where she practiced family law for a year and a half.
Joanna and her family returned to Augusta in 2014, and she began working in the District Attorney’s Office for the Augusta Judicial Circuit. Joanna served as the team leader assigned to Chief Judge Carl C. Brown, Jr.’s courtroom, prosecuting misdemeanor and felony cases ranging from drug offenses to murder.
Joanna joined Durham Law Firm in July 2018, as an associate and experienced trial attorney, focusing on Family Law, as well as Criminal Defense. She continues to serve as a Lieutenant Commander in the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the United States Navy Reserve.
